Goalball teen to miss out on Seoul games

A visually impaired goalball player’s hopes of competing for Team GB in South Korea this summer have been dashed.

Eighteen-year-old Brittany Stead is unable to play at the IBSA World Games in Seoul this June after finding out she needed an operation on her eyes.

But having already collected £2,000 through bucket collections and bag packing, the Cleckheaton sportswoman has no intention of stopping her fundraising and will continue to support her team mates.

Brittany and fellow players have been working tirelessly to reach the £35,000 needed to get them to Seoul, where they would face sides from China, Japan, Canada, Finland and Israel.

So far they have raised £9,795.

With cuts to funding, the team face missing out on the tournament – which is their last chance to qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio,Brazil.

Goalball is currently the only Paralympic team sport for women.

Brittany plays for Kirklees at Intermediate and Elite level.
