More than 1,500 crimes were reported to police in Dewsbury and Mirfield during April this year - but just two were shared with the public without prompting from the media.
They included 63 violent offences, 41 burglaries, 22 drug offences, seven sexual offences and seven robberies. The figures came to light this week after a Freedom of Information request by the Reporter.
It followed complaints from councillors that police were keeping our communities in the dark.
The Force has defended its methods, citing briefings for councillors, public meetings and online updates.
Insp Jenny Thompson said: “Direct appeals to the public are made through the local media and Facebook when witnesses are needed, or when awareness can help prevent further offences.”
Coun Mumtaz Hussain (Lab, Dews West) has joined the call saying more must be done to get the facts out to local people.
