Gas repair work causing traffic delays

Gas mains repairs are causing heavy delays for traffic for drivers in Dewsbury.

The work, which is being carried out by Northern Gas Networks on Bywell Road, Wakefield Road and Syke Lane, involves replacing 2.5km of old cast iron gas main with new plastic pipe.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place at the junction of Wakefield Road and Bywell Road.

It is expected that the work will take a further 10 days to complete.

Northern Gas Networks customer operations area manager, Stuart Armin, said: “Unfortunately the gas mains in this area have reached the end of their useful life. The new plastic pipes that we are putting in are more durable and will serve the area well for decades to come.

“We know that no one likes road works and we have planned our work to coincide with the school holiday period when traditionally traffic volumes are lower.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to motorists for any inconvenience caused while this essential work is carried out.”
