The Mayor of Kirklees Coun Martyn Bolt has urged the public to come out and support Sykes.

He said: “I have known Gary for a while after we met on a civic occasion. I know how hard he worked for the fight. It was a really tough fight but I think he is an example for everyone in the area.

“He did not give in and showed the courage to come back. Everyone should come out and show how proud they are of him.”

Coun Paul Kane (Lab, Dews East) said: “We all feel very proud of him and I know he is very proud of his Dewsbury heritage. It is great that we can recognise his achievements.

“He will be presented to the crowd from the balcony or the steps so we can celebrate his success.”

The civic reception will take place at Dewsbury Town Hall from 5.30pm.
