Garry McNie, 66, has been growing his facial hair during November for the past five years to raise awareness of men’s health issues including testicular and prostate cancer, mental health and physical inactivity.

This month he is aiming to get as many members of the community as possible involved by hosting a charity auction at local hair salon Revive.

Fifteen businesses have already donated prizes that will be subject to bids at a fun evening on November 28, which will also include food and entertainment.

Garry will have his facial growth coloured mauve and amber by the Revive team a week before it is shaved off in front of guests at the auction.

He is aiming for a droopy look modelled on South American revolutionaries and seventies film stars.

“The reaction has been very good so far,” said Garry, who is retired and lives on High Street.

“It’s not hard for me to grow a moustache - I just leave it alone, there’s no fertiliser! But I am annoyingly grey now - 30 years ago I had a full black beard.

“I’m making a fool of myself but that’s fine - it’s all very community-orientated. I’ve been supporting the cause for five years now and this year I decided to get more people involved.”

Pub-goers will also be able to follow his progress at the regular Friday karaoke nights at Westgate 23 during November.
