Funeral worker’s award for saving Mirfield mugging victim

Eddie Hiscoe, who works at Joseph Sheard Funeral Services, in Mirfield, was awarded the Divisional Commander’s Commendation for his act of courage.

Around a year ago, Mr Hiscoe was working at the funeral home in Nettleton Road when he witnessed a young man being attacked.

Without hesitation, Mr Hiscoe rushed to the victim’s aid and fought off the attacker.

His actions saved the young man from serious injury and stopped the mugger stealing his belongings.

Mr Hiscoe was presented with the prestigious honour at the West Yorkshire Police Award Ceremony.

He said: “I feel very humble. I did not have time to think about my own safety, I just saw what was happening and immediately went to help. It was just instinct.”

Mr Hiscoe was among only nine members of the public to receive an award at the ceremony which celebrated police officers across the district.

He was given the award by commander chief superintendent Tim Kingsman.

Assistant manager of Joseph Sheard Funeral Service Sally Roberts said: “We are all extremely proud of Eddie.

“He put the safety of a complete stranger before himself and for such a heroic deed he has been recognised with a well-deserved award.”
