Funeral high note for choirboy Sam

THE funeral of Leeds legend Sir Jimmy Savile is something Dewsbury Moor choirboy Sam Armitage will never forget.

For the 14-year-old overcame his nerves to sing the solo at the high-profile event at Leeds Cathedral last Wednesday November 9th.

A senior chorister in the Cathedral choir, Sam was asked to sing Psalm 62 before the thousands who had gathered to pay their respects.

“As the funeral drew nearer, I got more and more nervous,” said Sam, a pupil at St John Fisher RC High School.

“But all that changed as soon as I started to sing. I got into my stride.”

And much of his confidence came from knowing his mum, Sheridan, was in the Cathedral, sitting just behind Sir Jimmy’s family. “I wanted to do well for her,” he said.

Sam, who has been in the cathedral choir for five years, said the high-profile funeral was ‘amazing’.

Mrs Armitage said: “I am so proud of him.”
