The Mayor is a long-standing Kirklees councillor with two terms of office – 1984-1992 and from 1999 until present.

He said: “After 23 years representing the people of Kirklees I am honoured to become Mayor.

“I know from experience how many people value the input to the hundreds of voluntary organisations which invite the Mayor to their events each year and I look forward to continually meeting people from all over the area.”

Coun Smith has organised a charity dinner at Dewsbury Town Hall on September 19 and has secured the support of Dewsbury and Huddersfield branches of Barclays to match fund events.

He added: “Kirkwood Hospice is a great resource for all our community and has recently completed wonderful enhancements to its facilities and services.”
