Fundraisers seeing spots for Children in Need

The national charity appeal, which took place on Friday, raised more than £31m, and charitable people across Dewsbury and Mirfield did their bit to add to the total.

Pupils at Savile Town Infant and Nursery School dressed to impress at their Dress Up, Dress Down fundraiser.

The school, which is currently totting up their takings, allowed children to come in their pyjamas or favourite party outfits.

Headteacher Debbie Douglas said: “The children all looked really good and they definitely enjoyed not being in uniform.”

Crossley Fields pupils Joe Briggs, eight, and Will Meehan, 10, hope to have raised £200 with a sponsored cycle around Portal Crescent, Mirfield.

They were spurred on by neighbour Nick Scanlon, who pledged £2 a lap.

Internet television station Dewsbury TV took part in the Parkrun at Crow Nest Park on Saturday, and raised more than £200 for the charity, with donations still coming in.

Presenter Gail Hall said: “We did it because being a community TV station, we wanted to do something more in the public eye, and Children in Need is a good cause.”

Youngsters at Battyeford Pre-school were seeing spots as part of their Children in Need celebrations.

Maughans Bakery donated Pudsey Bear-shaped biscuits for the children to decorate and parents gave donations, before a teddy bears’ picnic.

“The day really did have a buzz to it. The children were excited as soon as they came in the door dressed up and with their toys,” said Sue Ward Battyeford Pre-school manager.

Thornhill Community Academy’s deputy head boy Suleman Shah and deputy head girl Rabia Iqbal got a soaking as part of a day of special events that raised £240.

Students raised cash during break and lunch times with activities including a sponsored silence and bun sale.

And children at Children’s Place Day Nursery at Dewsbury and District Hospital had a special guest on Friday when Pudsey Bear popped in to thank them.

The children raised £440 with a week packed full of fundraising events, including an autumn fair and dressing up day.

Nursery manager Wendy Bell said: “The children really enjoyed it. We’ve done really well and there’s still money coming in.”
