Fun for families this half-term

Families looking for something to occupy the kids this half term have a broad selection of events to choose from between West Yorkshire’s galleries, museums and councils.

The Royal Armouries, in Leeds, will host an Eastern Warrior exhibition all week, which will include live demonstrations, including martial arts, origami displays and sushi workshops.

On February 17, noon-4pm, a Chinese New Year craft session will be held at Bagshaw Museum in Batley.

The event will cost £1 per child. Entry to the museum is free and booking is not required.

The National Media Museum in Bradford will host a series of events centred around animated character Shaun the Sheep, a creation of Nick Park of Wallace and Gromit fame.

Children aged five and above will be able to take part in events to craft new characters and have a go at creating stop-motion animation sequences.

A grisly history of Temple Newsome, in Leeds, will be revealed in a guided tour of the house on February 20.

Abbey House Museum, in Leeds will host a series of events during the week titled Wonderful Wigs and Marvellous Moustaches on Tuesday, Silly Science - gel, goo and the science of looking good on Wednesday, Detective Day with Dastardly Disguises on Thursday and Through the looking glass, snap shots, shadows, symmetry and silhouettes on Friday.

And fans of superheroes and comics can turn up on the day to a Manga workshop and superhero session at Leeds City Museum on Tuesday.

An arts club to help children aged five and above hone their art skills will host a session at Batley Art Gallery on February 21.

Next Saturday’s theme will be animal drawing with graphite and coloured pencils.

Further craft events and quizzes will be held at Gomersal’s Red House Museum and Birstall’s Oakwell Park Museum.

Red House will host hands on arts and crafts activities 11am-4pm, February 17-19.

It will also host Pastel Portraits for Kids on February 18.

And Oakwell Hall will run a quiz 11am-4pm, February 17-19 with prizes for all correct answers. Tickets cost £2.50 for adults, £1 for children or £6 for families, and more information is available on 01924 326240.

Families can drop into Dewsbury Museum, in Crow Nest Park, at any time from noon-3.30pm on February 19 to create giant bird sculptures. Materials will be provided and more information is available on 01924 325100.
