Fuel prices drop by up to 8p

Fuel prices have fallen in recent weeks, after sharp increases in the cost of unleaded and diesel were seen earlier in the year.

Motorists are now paying as much as 6p less for a litre of unleaded fuel than they were at the start of March.

And drivers with diesel engines have seen their fuel costs fall by as much as 8p per litre over the same period.

This week, out of the six garages that the Reporter Series has been following, only the Texaco filling station in Savile Town had not dropped its prices since we last checked in with them in March.

It was the most expensive garage of the six, still selling unleaded fuel for 140.9p per litre, and diesel for 145.9p.

Last month, it was reported that supermarkets across the country were cutting their fuel prices nationally.

On April 16, Asda cut its prices by up to 2p per litre, with Sainsbury’s, which has a branch in Dewsbury; Morrisons, which has a branch in Heckmondwike; and Tesco, which has garages in Batley, Dewsbury and Cleckheaton, making similar price reductions.

In general, supermarkets tend to offer cheaper fuel prices than other garages. Tesco in Batley has typically been the cheapest of the six garages we have been following.

But on Monday, its prices were beaten by Texaco in Birstall, which was selling unleaded fuel at 131.9p per litre and diesel at 135.9p per litre.

This was 6p lower than its unleaded price was in March, and 7p lower than its diesel price was then.

Edmund King, president of motoring organisation the AA, said: “We predicted these cuts [the week before] with oil down to its lowest level in a month and the pound gaining on the dollar after its recent fall. This is perhaps a glimmer of sunlight for drivers after a hard, wet, pot-holed and expensive winter of driving.”
