Former working men's club named area's top pub

The Brew House on Halifax Road, Hightown, was awarded the Pub of the Season title for spring 2016 by branch chair Andy Kassube, who presented manager Nichola Quirke with her award.

The Partners Brewery-owned tap was taken over by Nichola in 2014 and she has since undertaken a major refurbishment of the former Heights Working Men’s Club building. The pub has grown its reputation for real ale, and now offers eight hand pumps with a range of Partners and Bob’s Brewery choices.

The beers have been brewed on-site since Partners relocated from Dewsbury last year, and Nichola’s partner Justin Clarke has taken over as brewer. Justin is keen to maintain tradition with core staples such as Working Class Hero and Cascade.

“The pub is at the heart of the community and it was nice to see a packed pub for the presentation, which demonstrates how this has become a true locals’ pub and a place where people can relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The brewery has invested money to give the bar a comfortable feel and this was another factor in helping the pub win this award along with the quality of its ales,” said Andy.
