Former McDonalds site in Dewsbury fails to sell at auction

FOR SALE McDonalds closed its doors in Church Street last November after 26 years in the town.

The building at 28 Church Street went up for auction on Tuesday October 21, but failed to meet its reserve.

The surveyor dealing with the property is now going to investigate the possibility of a post-auction sale.

The restaurant closed last November after 26 years in the town, when West Yorkshire franchisee Pritpal Singh claimed that it was “no longer economically viable.”

Mr Singh, who runs more than 20 McDonalds stores across West Yorkshire, said he decision came at the end of “a long evaluation process.”

Bethan Harris, PR and marketing manager for auctioneers Pugh and Company, said: “Number 28 Church Street was entered into our auction but did not meet its reserve in the room.

“We have had a number of interested parties and are hopeful to secure a post auction sale”.

At the time of its closure, Dewsbury Chamber of Trade president Trish Makepeace said: “It’s a blow for the town.

“It’s not often you hear of a McDonald’s closing. What message does this send to prospective investors?”

Coun Eric Firth said: “The building is in a great location, so I am in no doubt it will be snapped up soon”.
