The event will be the first at the church in around five years and funds will go towards its appeal to raise £250,000 for essential repair work.

Nostalgia has been picked as the theme of the festival and displays will include ‘hazy days of summer’, ‘home sweet home’ and the 1940s.

The centrepiece will be a Coronation-themed display on the chancel, which will include Union Jack displays in the choir area.

Head designer Ruth Edwards said the St Mary’s flower team had spent six months planning every lady detail of the event, and had to draft in help from members of the Huddersfield Flower Club.

Mrs Edwards said: “When you’re planning something on this scale you need to get some help. It’s a huge church to fill. We’ve spent £1,000 on flowers and now the pressure is on to make sure everything is done just right.”

The festival officially opens on Friday at 7pm and is open to the public on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, Sunday from 2pm to 5pm and Monday from 10am to 4pm.

Admission is £3.50 and profits will go to the St Mary’s Appeal. Refreshments will be available.
