Flats for rent in old county court

A Grade II listed building that has been empty since 2011 is now in use again.

New tenants will soon start moving into stylish new flats based in Dewsbury’s former county court building.

It is part of Kirklees Council’s Empty Clusters Project, which aims to bring empty properties back into use and create 125 new homes in Dewsbury and Huddersfield town centres.

Sites involved in the project include key heritage buildings such as the court and Pioneer House.

Kirklees secured £2.8m from the Department for Communities and Local Government for the project.

Twelve one and two-bedroom apartments for rent have been created in the Eightlands Road building, which had been empty since March 2011 following the relocation of the court service to Huddersfield.

It was sold for £278,000 to private owners John and Sheelagh Robinson.

The apartments range in price from £450-£800 per month.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “The first five apartments already have lets agreed on and the prospective tenants have been attracted by the imaginative design, quality fittings and convenient location.

“The conversion of the property has provided much needed quality residential accommodation for rent in the town centre and should help to increase spend and footfall for existing town centre businesses.

“The development means future care and maintenance of the building is ensured.”
