Fisher’s lad could be up for an Oscar

But for former St John Fisher pupil Sam Holland, the 83rd Annual Academy Awards are a much bigger deal as he’s been nominated in the short film category.

Sam, 20, plays the lead character in Wish 143, a 23-minute film telling the story of 15-year-old cancer patient David who has one wish before he dies – to spend an hour with a naked woman.

“He’s just desperate to come of age before his time runs out,” said Sam, a student at Lancaster University. “The film follows his journey into maturity, as he explores love and sex while he still can as he’s going through his treatment.

“David was a nice character to play because he’s just a typical teenager, a normal kid. He takes having cancer on the chin, sneaking out of the house to have a drink with his mate.”

The short film, written by Tom Bidwell and directed by Ian Barnes, was shot in summer 2009 and has won awards around the globe, qualifying it for the Oscars.

Sam, of Bradford Road, Birstall, attended Stage 84, the Yorkshire School of Performing Arts in Bradford.
