Two teams are still at Heckmondwike Fibre Bonding’s Wellington Mills site damping down the smouldering shell.

Firefighters from Cleckheaton and Batley were first called out to the single storey building in Huddersfield Road, Millbridge, at around 1.40am this morning (Saturday) after reports of a building fire.

Cleckheaton watch commander Colin Brown said: “As we got close, we realised it was all alight. We had to act quickly to prevent it spreading to another adjoining building with a lot of storage and other units.”

Crews from Odsal, Morley, Dewsbury and Mirfield fire stations were also called to help bring the fire under control.

Ten pumps, an aerial appliance and other specialist equipment were used when the fire was at its peak.

Watch commander Brown said: “It took probably an hour to 90 minutes to bring all the building under control, even with all those resources.

“The building is a total loss. The roof has collapsed and the walls have partially collapsed.

“We don’t yet know the cause. We’ve had a fire investigation officer there overnight and he’ll be going back again later today.”

He said the building was believed to have been used to store fibre by-products from making carpets.
