Two engines went to the Minster just before 5pm after an eagle-eyed member of staff from Dewsbury Sports Centre spotted what they thought was smoke rising from the building.

Church warden Richard Middleton said steam from the boiler often rose upwards when there was little wind.

Firefighters from Dewsbury and Ossett attended when the alarm was raised. No one was in the building at the time.
