Fifty years of fighting fires

Dewsbury Fire Station is 
celebrating its fiftieth 
anniversary this year.

And firefighters from the station are appealing for help to celebrate half a century of battling blazes and keeping us safe.

A party for members of the station old and new and their families is being held on June 21. The firefighters hope to put on a display of photographs and memorabilia at the event.

Firefighter Mick Parry said: “We are asking for anyone with a connection with the station to come forward with any pictures they might have from the last 50 years, whether its of the station, personnel or incidents – anything to do with Dewsbury Fire Station.”

The station in Huddersfield Road was opened in January 1964 by the chairman of the watch committee Coun WA Greenwood and the mayor Coun V Ferrari, but the current crop of firefighters wanted to wait until summer to have their gathering.

It will serve as a major milestone, as the station is due to close and staff moved to a new site in Carlton Road, Batley Carr, by October 2015.

Mr Parry said: “It will be a great opportunity to get everyone back together and let people see what it is like now.”
