But staff at Cleckheaton’s station were shocked to discover a big black feline in one of their engines.

Green Watch had been called out to a false alarm in Mowat Court, Windy Bank, on Sunday. While there, they decided to offer some fire safety advice and stayed for about two hours.

A Red Watch member got the surprise the next morning, routinely checking an engine pump locker.

“The cat jumped out and frightened the life out of him,” said crew commander Craig Hill. “It must have been a cold day and the cat found a nice warm part of the fire engine.” The crew coaxed the cat into the station with milk and later found its delighted owner.
