The fake email, claiming to be from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), contains a link which infects the computer with a virus.

It has been sent to some patients in the North Kirklees area from a fake email account with the subject ‘Important blood analysis result’.

It says the results of the patient’s blood test reveal possible signs of cancer and asks the recipient to click on a link

for further information.

Dr David Kelly, Chair of NHS North Kirklees CCG, said: “Emails like this are likely to cause great distress to patients, but we strongly advise anyone who receives it to delete it immediately and not click on any of the links contained within it.

“Test results for cancer are never sent by email and this email is a hoax which should be ignored.”

Police are investigating.
