Exhibition of familiar landmarks in unfamiliar settings

New exhibition by artist David Martin at Batley Library.

The 68 works, by David Martin, include Dewsbury Town Hall, the Pioneer Building, Bagshaw Museum, Wheelwright College and Batley Library itself.

But the local landmarks often turn up in unfamiliar surroundings, such as Dewsbury Town Hall as part of a historic Venetian scene.

Mr Martin said: “Landscape painting isn’t just about the scene before you but about capturing the feeling you felt when painting it – the reason you wanted to paint it in the first place.

“I don’t try to do anything different or controversial for the sake of it but just continue the traditional methods of creating a painting so that others can appreciate the beauty I see.

“I use a simple palette of usually only three colours and white in oils or watercolours and paint landscapes, seascapes, portraits and still lifes.”

Mr Martin was born in Birstall, educated in Batley, and lives and works in Thornhill.

His work caught the eye of visitors and organisers in an open exhibition last year, and his portraits can be found at Dewsbury Town Hall and Dewsbury Museum, in Crow Nest Park.
