Ex-councillor quits Liberal Democrats

Naz Hussain, who represented Dewsbury West from 2004 until this year, has resigned from the Liberal Democrats.

He was defeated by Labour’s Darren O’Donovan in the local elections in May.

Mr Hussain has left the party because he feels it can not stick to its core principles while it is in a coalition government with the Conservatives.

He also said he did not agree with the party back-tracking over tuition fees.

He said: “I was expecting the party to come out of the coalition after the terrible results in this year’s elections, but it has not.”

The former councillor has said he has not joined another party, but was considering standing for Kirklees Council again as an independent in 2012.

He said: “I’m still committed to local politics and I’m working with constituents on a daily basis, so there is no reason why I can’t win as an independent. The overwhelming likelihood is that I will stand, but I can’t say what will happen tomorrow. If things stay as they are though, I will stand.”
