Villagers celebrate yet another Green Flag triumph
The historic village of East Bierley is celebrating yet again having officially retained its prestigious Green Flag Community Award for the 2026-2027 season.
The award for the village, which boasts a picturesque green, pond and surrounding park land, extends an unbroken streak of national recognition that, incredibly, began in 2019, and was presented to volunteers from the East Bierley Village Preservation Society.

The group has been established for over 50 years and serves to protect, maintain, and celebrate the village’s physical heritage, wildlife, and vibrant community life.
Praising the volunteers, MP for Spen Valley Kim Leadbeater said: “This is a remarkable achievement and a real testament to the dedication, care and community spirit that defines East Bierley.
“East Bierley is a very special place. I always enjoy visiting the village and spending time with you all – whether it’s taking part in litter-picks, joining community events or simply walking through the beautiful green spaces that you work so hard to protect.
“Your commitment to looking after the village, its environment, and its heritage is truly inspiring.”
The iconic Green Flag continues to fly high on the dedicated community flagpole on Bierley Marsh, and this year’s flag will again be ceremoniously raised in early September.
One village resident said: “The Preservation Society should be really proud of themselves for the work that they put in, rain or shine, all year round.

“It’s absolutely lovely to see the flag flying on the Marsh.”
The East Bierley Village Preservation Society helps to organise other events throughout the year including the Christmas Lights switch-on, the annual Scarecrow Festival, the Spring Fair celebrations, and the Remembrance Day memorial.
