English Defence League rally in Dewsbury

A RALLY by the English Defence League held in Dewsbury on Saturday ended with one arrest.

Police were called to The Principal in Northgate at 4.17pm following reports of around 100 people demonstrating outside the pub.

Member of the far-right group were escorted by police to Dewsbury train station where British Transport Police (BTP) were standing by.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said there was some ‘minor disorder’ while the rally took place but no arrests were made at that stage.

A BTP spokeswoman said around 40 EDL supporters arrived at the station at 5.07pm.

She said half the group took a train towards Leeds, while the other half boarded a train to Huddersfield.

She said officers travelled with them on the trains and one 27-year-old from Pontefract was arrested for possessing cannabis.
