A former British title holder, Danny Turton had been hiring out church halls and gyms to give lessons. But after saving for years he has managed to get his own place – The Unit – in Hoyle Head Mills, Earlsheaton.

And the 26-year-old, of Frances Road, has been overwhelmed by the demand for the classes in boxing, kickboxing, Thai boxing and martial arts skills.

“We’ve only been open a few weeks but it’s been absolutely packed out,” he said.

“I’ve always wanted to have a unit in Earlsheaton. There are some underprivileged areas around here and there’s not much to do. It’s great for kids who need something to focus on and just need to get some frustration out.”

Demand is so great that Mr Turton plans to move into one of the bigger units soon.

A steel erector by trade, he has also been working with children with behavioural problems at Manor Croft Academy, his former school.

He and his other coaches are training everyone from beginners to women and pro-fighters.

Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from karate, Muay Thai and Western boxing. It is practiced for self-defense, general fitness, or as a contact sport.

The Unit, based in unit six, also offers general fitness sessions and personal training.

The children’s classes are known as Little Vipers.
