Dig this! Knight on streets to promote history project

a SEVENTEENTH century knight in full armour was spotted clattering through streets and playgrounds on Wednesday.

The civil war warrior was promoting a community archaeology project which will delve into the history of Thornhill Hall, the remains of which stand in Rectory Park.

The year-long scheme will be launched at the park on Sunday afternoon, between 2pm and 4pm, when community archaeologist Kevin Cale and the Friends of Rectory Park will set out their plans.

A Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £46,800 will finance the project, which aims to give local people a hands-on role in discovering more about the hall, which was destroyed in August 1648, during the English Civil War.

Friends of Rectory Park chairman Wade Hyde said: “Kevin specialises in getting people of all ages and walks of life involved in archaeology and finding out about their local history. He’ll be going out into schools, getting the pupils interested and taking part. He also hopes to form an archaeology group.”

Coun David Sheard, cabinet member for Streetscene, added: “This will be a fascinating project and will help put a spotlight on this area of Thornhill’s history.”
