Dewsbury’s £2m Heritage Lottery bid passes first step

A £2M Heritage Lottery Fund bid for a Dewsbury regeneration scheme has made it through the first round of applications.

Kirklees Council announced today that its bid to the Townscape Heritage Initiative programme had been given initial support.

It means money has been set aside for the scheme by the fund and the council must now submit a fully-developed application to secure the full award.

The cash, and a further £1.7m from the council, would be used to regenerate the Northgate area of the town centre, including Pioneer House.

Coun David Sheard, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This is good news for the town and will go a long way to reverse the creeping decline of the important buildings in the historic core of Dewsbury.

“We will work closely with building owners to produce high quality refurbishments of retail and office spaces which will encourage local people, visitors and businesses into this beautiful town.”

Work for the second application round will take around six months and the scheme would begin in April 2013 if the bid was successful.
