Dewsbury student’s Florida bridge fall

A STUDENT from Dewsbury fell from a railway bridge in Florida before his best friend plunged to his death in an icy Florida river.

Joe Cundall, 21, tumbled from Fort Lauderdale’s New River after he and friend Kyle Conrad were caught out when the bridge they were crossing suddenly rose.

The bridge is not meant for pedestrians but the pair thought the bridge would stay in a down position, rather than rising to an upright one as it did when they were crossing it.

Mr Cundall, a former Heckmondwike Grammar School pupil, was treated in hospital for ankle and back injuries before being released.

But Mr Conrad, also 21, was unresponsive when a fire rescue team pulled him from the river. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

On Sunday, Mr Cundall’s father Kevin flew out to Florida to comfort his son, who is a business administration student at the state’s Lynn University.
