Developer Stirling Investment Properties submitted plans to Kirklees Council to build 203 houses next to the Tetley’s Stadium on the Owl Lane site.

As part of a deal it is hoped the development would secure the long-term future of the club.

They will also provide a full size floodlit all-weather sports pitch and two floodlit all weather multi-use games areas, footpaths and cycleways, as well as a 334 space car park for the Rams.

The rugby league club will generate income from commercial use of the facilities.

Kirklees Council’s Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee supported the application at Dewsbury Town Hall on Thursday.

Coun Steve Hall (Lab, Heckmondwike) said: “It has got everything you want in an application. It has affordable housing, £348,000 for education and hopefully will bring the community of Dewsbury together.”

Rams chairman Mark Sawyer said the development was a great opportunity to provide a stronger and healthier community in the town.

Councillors approved the plans which have now been referred to the Secretary of State for full approval.
