Dewsbury Moor residents decide how to spend £1m Lotto windfall

PEOPLE in Dewsbury Moor are being asked how a £1m grant should be spent.

£20,000 has been set aside to train 10 local people to carry out surveys as part of the Big Local scheme to improve the area.

In 2010 the Big Lottery Fund picked it as one of 50 areas in England to get one of its £1m Big Local Trust grants.

An action group was formed to work out how to spend the money and it is now moving the project into its second phase.

Unemployment and safe places for children to play have already been identified as priority issues.

So far three local people have been trained and the others were due to complete their survey training at the end of this week.

Chairwoman the Rev Kathy Robertson said: “The great thing about this Big Local Trust money is there is no time limit. It gets spent when we’ve got our plan together and have decided how we want to spend it.”

Last week, the Dewsbury Moor Big Local group hosted an event at Dewsbury Museum where they shared their experiences of the project so far with other Big Local groups.

“It was about networking, being encouraged by the progress we have made and sharing ideas,” added Mrs Robertson.
