Dewsbury County Borough silver sold at Welsh Market

RECOVERED TREASURE The piece of Dewsbury Borough Council silverware bought by Roslyn Aubrey in Wales.

Amateur collector Roslyn Aubrey bought the distinctive serving dish from a stall at Abergavenny Market and set about researching its origins.

She said: “The man running the stall said he thought I should buy this piece because he had never seen anything like it in all the years he’d been in the trade, and had never seen the crest before. He thought it might be unusual.

“I did some investigation and eventually got through to Kirklees Council.”

Council officials told Mrs Aubrey that the piece had originally been part of a collection commissioned by Dewsbury County Borough for ceremonial use.

It was produced by Edward Viner and Company, which was based in Bath Street in Sheffield, in 1933.

The collection was sold when the county borough was dissolved in 1974 and replaced by the present day council.

Mrs Aubrey, 58, who lives in Monmouthshire, said she wondered if the piece held any interest for local collectors or museums who might want to keep it for posterity.
