Design guide for our town

Dewsbury Regeneration Board commissioned the guide, which set out standards Kirklees Council will expect developers to follow.

General principles include retaining and enhancing historic features, co-operation with neighbouring properties to improve the appearance of a street and improving unsympathetic shopfronts.

It also discusses specific building materials and features, signage and lighting, and use of A-boards.

Board chairman Coun Paul Kane said: “What sets Dewsbury apart is its rich architectural legacy and the character of its acclaimed conservation area – unique assets of which Dewsbury residents and businesses can be proud.

“This design guide is a framework which sets out simple and achievable standards of design, not only for our buildings, but also our open spaces and the public realm.

“This in turn helps us to preserve and enhance our town’s special character – the very qualities which enhance its attraction to visitors, shoppers and businesses, all of which will contribute to increased viability and vitality.”

The design guide, which is due to be discussed by Kirklees Cabinet members on Tuesday, will be used to support the board’s ongoing enforcement work.

In 2010, the board named 11 grot spots blighting the town’s major routes which needed urgent repairs.

The Old Anchor and Savile Hotel were both demolished as a result, while repairs have been made to some other buildings on the list.

Coun Kane (Lab, Dews East) said: “This guide is a further demonstration of our commitment to Dewsbury and its development.

“It complements the positive work that has already taken place within the town centre as a result of the Strategic Development Framework, and anticipates the benefits yet to come from the Dewsbury Townscape Heritage Initiative grant scheme.”

The design guide has been funded as part of the enforcement strategy. Its agreement and online publication will not need further funding.
