Dementia worker is honoured by rotary club

Cath Knowles was recognised for her work in helping people with the disease.

She was presented with the award at the Rotary Club’s spring concert, which took place at St Paul’s Church.

President Sue Charlesworth presented Cath with the award.

She said: “This award recognises the substantial contribution of people to their local community.

“Cath worked as a care assistant and later as a care co-ordinator for Kirklees for a number of years.

“During the course of her work she met many people with dementia who suffered both from the medical problem and the stigma associated with it.

“After retirement in 2004 Cath felt she had to do something to try to help.

“Together with her husband Ron, Cath now runs the Happy Memories Dementia Support Group.”

Two groups are run at St. Andrews in Mirfield.

One is held fortnightly while the other is held monthly as a friendship group for carers.

There is also a fortnightly group held at St Paulinus Parochial Hall in West Town, Dewsbury and finally a monthly luncheon club takes place at a local hotel.

Sue said that Cath was a more-than-worthy winner of this award.

She added: “The Rotary motto is ‘Service Before Self’ and Cath really exemplifies this.”

Cath, of Ravens Crescent, Scout Hill, said: “We have an active social calendar and the carers’ group is particularly valued as it is an opportunity to get-together, to discuss the anxieties and experiences of the role of caring and to share ideas and receive positive support.

“We also have lot of fun.

“It is hard work, but very rewarding.”
