Deaf children go up and away

Fifteen society members aged between 11 months and 16 years were treated to an action-packed flight experience day at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, funded by donations and fundraising.

In the morning the kids were given a special tour around the only remaining airworthy Vulcan bomber plane, thanks to the Vulcan to the Sky Trust. The children got to find out about the history of the aircraft and how pilots had to climb in and out to get inside.

Despite a foggy morning, the weather improved by the afternoon meaning it was time for the kids to put on their high visibility jackets and get into some small aircraft.

Charity Aerobility provided the society with three small planes for the day so children and their parents were able to take a short flight around the area. And the older children were in for an even bigger treat, as they were allowed to take the controls and try their hand at flying the planes themselves.

Chairperson of Kirklees Deaf Children’s Society Jayne Fenton said: “All in all it was a fantastic day and the children had an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.

“Also, a big thank you to One 17 Design Charitable Trust and the Pink Ball Association whose kind donations helped us to fund the day.”
