The facility at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre was criticised for “compromising children’s safety” by inspector Helen Blackburn who visited the site in June.

She found the staff failed to maintain accurate daily records of children’s attendance hours.

Mrs Blackburn said: “The quality of teaching is variable because there is sometimes a lack of focus when planning for younger children’s individual needs and progression.”

She did, however, add that the children had safe and independent access to a varied range of resources.

A KAL spokesman said: “The inspection highlighted some administrative procedures needed improving.

“These procedures were rectified with immediate effect at the time of the inspection and since the report was released, the areas for improvements have been made.

“Overall KAL feel that the majority of the Ofsted report was positive highlighting children were happy and have safe and independent access to a varied range of resources which aims to children being active and healthy.

“Having observed various activities and also having met with staff, management and parents, we feel that the inspector was given a full insight to the children’s activities at the centre.”

The sports and tennis centre is also home to Brownhill Community Pre-school, which is run independently.

Brownhill was rated good with some outstanding qualities at its last inspection.
