Day of action aims to cut burglaries

Reducing the number of burglaries in a Ravensthorpe estate was the aim of a day of action by council workers, police, firefighters and other organisations.

Together they visited 166 homes in Northstead to share crime prevention advice, carried out free home fire safety checks and cut back hedgerows to improve visibility.

Coun Jean Calvert, Cabinet member for communities, said: “Although burglaries in the area are relatively low, events like today act as a great reminder to communities to keep a watchful eye and make sure that the burglar’s job is made as difficult as possible.

“Some of the activities are not expensive or difficult. It’s simple – remove the opportunity and prevent the burglary.”

Community Payback teams of offenders cleared overgrown greenery and cleaned communal areas.

West Yorkshire Probation Trust supervisor Allan Fitzsimmons said: “We have a long-standing link with Northstead and it is important that offenders on Community Payback can be part of the work to transform the area and give local people renewed pride in where they live.”

Organisations taking part in the community and crime prevention day included West Yorkshire Police, Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Probation Trust, Community Rangers, West Yorkshire Fire Service and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing.
