A few short years ago, Daniel Baines couldn’t walk – but next month the 13-year-old will attempt to walk a mile with the aid of just one crutch.

Thornhill Community Academy pupil Daniel’s condition is undiagnosed, but has similar symptoms to cerebral palsy.

He uses a wheelchair and walking sticks to get around but will push himself to the limits next month in a bid to complete a Sport Relief mile at the Spenborough running track.

His mum Yvonne said: “Before an operation in 2008 he couldn’t walk but a couple of months after he was walking in crutches and now he just keeps getting stronger.

“It’s all down to him and his determination. He does a lot of physio and is a good swimmer. He never gets frustrated. He never says ‘Why me? A mile is a long way for Daniel but he will try to push through it.”

Leeds United fan Daniel said the motivation to complete the challenge came from the prospect of raising as much money as possible for others less fortunate than himself.

He added: “There are kids and other people who don’t have the care, shelter, medication and food that I have and I want to help them.”

Thornhill Community Academy will be supporting Daniel by holding numerous fundraising activities throughout the school.

Sport Relief takes place every two years and encourages people to get active, have fun and raise cash for good causes.

Daniel will be attempting the challenge on March 23 at 10am.
