These pictures show the moment Peter Sutcliffe appeared at Dewsbury Magistrates after his arrest of the Yorkshire Ripper murders.

Police are seen holding back crowds outside the court in January 1981.

He can also be seen being escorted from the magistrates with a coat covering his face.

Sutcliffe was convicted of the crimes later that year.

He murdered 13 women across Yorkshire and north-west England between 1975 and 1980.

The serial killer was serving a whole life term.

Sutcliffe spent three decades at Broadmoor Hospital before being moved to HMP Frankland in County Durham in 2016.

The the serial killer known has now died in hospital on Friday, a Prison Service spokesman has said.

The 74-year-old had tested positive for Covid-19 and was suffering from underlying health conditions.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “HMP Frankland prisoner Peter Coonan (born Sutcliffe) died in hospital on November 13. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”

Sutcliffe had reportedly suffered from a range of conditions before his death including heart trouble, diabetes and obesity.
