Police officer on M62 hit by car and suffers injuries as driver flees from the scene

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after an officer was hit by a car as they attended a broken down vehicle.

The police officer was attending the report of a broken down van on the M62, on February 19 at 5.49pm.

Officers were on the M62 westbound carriageway about half a mile before junction 24 at Ainley Top assisting with the broken-down white transit van when a dark grey Volkswagen estate pulled up onto the hard shoulder.

As one of the officers approached the Volkswagen to speak to the driver, it pulled off, hitting the officer with its wing mirror, knocking him to the ground and resulting in cuts and bruises.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for information to identity this vehicle and its driver and are asking for anyone who may have witnessed it, or may have Dash Cam footage from the time and location, to get in touch by calling 101 or via the Live Chat on the West Yorkshire Police website, quoting log 1225 of 19 February 2020
