Gang attack cyclist on Dewsbury canal towpath and try to steal his bike

A cyclist was attacked by a gang of young men who tried to steal his bike on a canal towpath in Dewsbury.

It happened between 7pm and 9.30pm at Millbank Lock, which is between Horbury and Dewsbury, on Tuesday, May 5.

The victim was confronted by a group of six to eight young men on pedal cycles who had congregated at the lock.

He was then knocked to the ground by one of the men.

The group then attacked him as they tried to steal his bicycle.

The cyclist managed t keep hold of his bicycle until the attacks gave up.

They then left and continued along the towpath in the direction of Dewsbury.

The cyclist returned home and later needed hospital treatment for facial injuries.

DC Liam Rye of Kirklees CID, said: “This was a nasty and cowardly assault by a group of up to eight males on a loan victim who was out for exercise.

“We are investigating and I would like to speak to anyone on the Horbury to Dewsbury towpath between 7pm and 9.30pm who may have seen this group of suspects or who saw the attack itself at Millbank Lock.
