CCTV of suspect in Morley town centre arson

Detectives investigating a suspected arson that destroyed a new block of flats being built in Morley have released CCTV images of a man they want to identify.

The large-scale fire started in the building at the junction of High Street and Fountain Street at about 3.30am on Saturday, May 2.

Detective Constable Fred Winster, of Leeds District CID, said: “This was a very serious fire that completely destroyed the building and caused damage to neighbouring properties. We suspect the fire was started deliberately and we are still carrying out extensive enquiries to trace the person responsible.

“Checks on CCTV in the area have shown this male on a bicycle in the vicinity around the time of the incident. Although his face is not clear on the images, his clothing and the bike itself are fairly distinctive and we would like to hear from anyone who thinks they know who it is.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC 6344 Winster at Elland Road on 0113 385 9397 or via 101 or call the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
