Arson arrests made and police appeal launched after Heckmondwike fields set ablaze

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed they have made two arrests - and are appealing for witnesses - after some fields in Heckmondwike were set on fire.

The Kirklees District Investigation Team has launched an arson investigation and is appealing for information after the fields, off Walkley Lane, were set on fire yesterday (Monday, July 13) afternoon.

Officers were called at about 3.40pm by residents reporting a group of males had been seen setting a fire in fields near to the location.

Emergency services attended and, following enquiries, police located and arrested a 17-year-old and a 30-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

A large scene was put in place around the affected area for public safety while the blaze was tackled by firefighters.

Several nearby roads also had to be closed due to smoke impeding the carriageways.

DI Catherine Shackleton of Kirklees CID, said: “We are continuing to investigate this arson offence and are appealing for witnesses, and particularly anyone who saw males behaving suspiciously in the fields behind Walkley Lane at just after 3pm last night.

“Given the ongoing hot weather any such fires can obviously present a significant risk to public safety, and necessitated emergency services establishing large scenes for public safety in the area.

“Two suspects remain in custody today and I would ask anyone who has information or footage which could assist us to contact the Kirklees District Investigation Team on 101 or online at https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/livechat”

Information can also be given anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 1111.
