Could you eat pig brain, bug pie and lamb testicles?

A new charity is kickstarting its campaign for official recognition with an I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here-style banquet, in which members will eat a smorgasbord of dreadful things in the name of autism fundraising.

On Saturday April 4 upstart charity The Whole Autism Family will enjoy a menu featuring pig brain, bug pie, jellied worms, lamb testicles and lobster lollipops at the Victoria Function Room in Batley to help raise the £5,000 it needs to become a registered charity.

Group member Stevie Oliver, from The Oval in Dewsbury, said: “Some of it has to be dried and prepared, otherwise its listed as ‘not fit for human consumption’.

“But when you read into the nutritional value of some of the stuff then you think ‘wow, that’s quite good’.

“We want to make it as entertaining as possible.”

Stevie’s best friend Rachel Allatt, whose son Joseph is autistic, was quietly determined to conquer the challenges ahead of her.

She said: “I’m not feeling great about it. I’m a bit scared but it’s for a good cause so it has to be done.

“The group coming together has been absolutely fabulous and I’m grateful to the people who have been very generous and put the time in to raise money because it’s such a worthwhile cause.”

The group often hosts speakers at its weekly meetings at the Sure Start centre in Dewsbury Moor to offer help and advice not just to people with autism, but to friends and relatives who need some support.

Rachel, of Wakefield Crescent, Earlsheaton, said: “To be able to talk to other mums in the same position as you is so, so vital.

“It means a lot to me because we spent nearly three and a half years fighting for a diagnosis for Joseph. It was a very stressful and upsetting time and you can feel you’re banging your head against the wall.

“The support helps in ways a lot of people might not understand.”
