Complaints against police rise

Complaints against West Yorkshire Police have increased for the second year running.

Independent Police Complaints Commission statistics for 2010/11 showed the force recorded 940 complaints against its officers – up four per cent on the previous year and in contrast to a national trend which saw overall complaints fall by four per cent.

West Yorkshire’s top three areas for allegations were around incivility, 328 allegations, other neglect of duty, 310, and other assault, 314.

IPCC Commissioner Nicholas Long said the level of complaints was ‘disappointing’.

West Yorkshire deputy chief constable David Crompton said the figures refered to the year ending in March. Current data, he said, showed an 11 per cent fall in complaints reflecting action to boost the force’s service to communities.
