Community unites for Savile Town football tournament

Muslim faith leaders were joined by local MP Paula Sherriff, high-ranking army officer Colonel Mike Butterwick, the chief constable of West Yorkshire Police and the chief executive of Kirklees Council at Let’s Unite 2016.

The yearly event sees teams of teenagers and over-40s contest a fun six-a-side football competition designed to promote community integration.

Also on offer were activities such as archery, an army obstacle course, bouncy castle, donkey rides and a barbecue.

“It was fantastic to be part of such an amazing community event. Bringing communities together, sharing stories and having fun is the best way of breaking down myths and misunderstandings and we were really pleased to have a role in doing this. This was the first time the British Army has been here but I very much hope it will not be the last,” said Colonel Butterwick.

Police officers spoke to visitors about recruitment, crime concerns and community relations, while the fire service provided safety information.

Kumon Y’All is run by volunteers and provides activities for all ages. Paula Sherriff MP is a keen supporter of the organisation.

“In these turbulent times, it is truly fantastic to join family events like this, organised to bring people together to enjoy themselves, regardless of our differences. I support the great work done locally by volunteers at Kumon Y’All to promote community cohesion and I look forward to joining them at more events like this in the future,” she said.
