The community is backing boxer Gary Sykes to reclaim the British title when he fights in front of a home crowd on Saturday night.

The super featherweight will face Manchester’s Jon Kays at Dewsbury Sports Centre as he bids to win the prestigious Lonsdale belt outright.

Pupils at Westmoor Primary School, Sykes’ former school, made a good luck banner for the boxing star this week.

Headteacher Kim Lonnergan said: “We wish Gary the best of luck and hope he comes out victorious this weekend.” Ladbrokes, in Foundry Street, Dewsbury, is also backing Sykes to win and has raffled off two tickets for the bout in aid of charity.

Manager Shaun Jones said: “All the staff at Ladbrokes wish Gary the best of luck and we hope to can win the title.” Dewsbury Town Hall will stage the weigh-in for the bout on Friday, which will be open to the public from 1pm.
