Community helps goose

An artist will be selling portraits of a goose, which was apparently attacked by sick yobs who ripped off its beak.

The bird was left with just the top part of its beak and its tongue hanging out following the terrifying ordeal in March.

The Canadian goose, named Wilton by locals, was found injured and struggling to feed in Wilton Park, Batley.

The community rallied around the animal and took it to the Yorkshire Swan Rescue Hospital, where it is being cared for.

Artist David Martin, of Thornhill, Dewsbury, has painted a portrait of the bird and is selling 100 limited edition prints to help pay for its care.

He said: “I have been told the goose is doing well.

“I had always wanted to do a painting of the ducks in Wilton Park and thought it would be a good idea to help support the cause.”

He is selling the prints for £15 each, with £10 being donated to the rescue hospital.

Mr Martin will also show the painting at an art exhibition at Dewsbury Town Hall, from Saturday July 12.
