Community centre ‘will close’ due to flats plan

Initial plans to for a new residential development have been passed – despite a nearby community centre warning the move would lead to its closure.

Users of the Trinity Centre at Batley Carr Trinity Church have had unrestricted use of an adjacent car park in Upper Road for the past 16 years.

But last week Kirklees Council’s Heavy Woollen District planning sub-committee voted to accept outline proposals to allow a new development. The new car park would be for those residents, forcing Trinity Centre users out. The former arts centre on the site will also be demolished.

Bill Thompson, chairman of the Trinity Centre management committee, said: “Without an adequate car park adjacent to the centre business will rapidly decline to such a level that the centre would no longer be viable and would have to close. This could eventually put the long-term future of the Holy Trinity Church in jeopardy.” Kirklees Council, which owns the land, has offered to provide a smaller car park 30m away.
