College on film

Students from Kirklees College were joined by others from Bradford and Grimsby for the filming of Doctor Faustus – the latest creation from the the Co-operative British Youth Film Academy.

And for the first time in its history, the academy chose the college’s Dewsbury campus as its filming base for its summer camp.

The production, which tells the tale of a businessman who sells his soul so the devil can have a holiday, was filmed around the town, with scenes shot at Dewsbury Town Hall and at the Frontier nightclub.

Directors John Eyre and Robin Heap said the town had become an inspiration for filming.

In another first for the academy, this year’s show had its own purpose-built set, and it will feature computer generated imagery, which will be incorporated during the editing stages in Grimsby, shot using green screens.

Robin said: “Some of these students have shown an amazing amount of dedication to this project.

“We’ve tried to give everyone every opportunity in filming and production that we can.”

Kirklees College performing arts student Amy Lodge, from Birkenshaw, was cast as head witch for the film.

She said: “I’ve learned so much from doing this; loads of different skills. I’ve loved it.

I’ve really enjoyed being behind the camera, as well as in front of it”

When completed, copies of Doctor Faustus will be sent to film festivals for exposure.

“We’re all getting really excited about it,” John added.
